BUYING A HOME IN KANATA

One of the most wonderful things about buying a home in Ottawa is the diversity it offers! From downtown condos to suburban family homes and townhouses, our city has it all. Farmland, hiking trails, and green space border the suburbs that surround the city. This makes them the perfect choice for the city slicker who enjoys spending lots of time in nature. With its proximity to Ottawa’s Greenbelt, the lively suburban neighbourhood of Kanata provides the best of both worlds!

The community of Kanata can be found approximately 22 kilometres west of Ottawa’s downtown core. Kanata was amalgamated into the City of Ottawa in 2001. It has been growing in both size and popularity ever since! Kanata’s rapid growth has been largely in part to the burgeoning high-tech industry. These major Ottawa tech companies include Mitel, Nokia, and Ericsson setting up shop in Kanata. This encouraged high-tech workers to look for homes close to their company headquarters. Kanata’s high-tech industry is clustered along March Road. In the Kanata North Business Park and Kanata Research Park, and along Eagleson Road, in the Kanata South Business Park.

Recreation

Are you a hockey fan? Located in Kanata, just off the 417, is the Canadian Tire Centre—home stadium of the Ottawa Senators! The arena also plays host to a number of musical acts and shows that pass through the city, such as Bryan Adams, Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake.

You will find a number of family recreation centres in Kanata offering everything from splash pads and swimming pools to ice rinks, fitness centres, and more. The Kanata Recreation Complex located in Walter Baker Park has two full-size arenas with spectator seating and offers a wide selection of recreation programs for babies, children, and adults. Located in Kanata North, the Richcraft Recreation Complex is a high-quality fitness and aquatic facility and community centre. It is also an access point to Trillium Woods, a 15-kilometre hiking and biking trail network offered by the City of Ottawa in partnership with the Ottawa Mountain Bike Association (OMBA). Arts

The Ron Maslin Playhouse is a 350-seat theatre opened and operated by Kanata Theatre, an all-volunteer community theatre company. They stage five productions a year, as well as an annual children’s musical.

Green Space

To the east side of Kanata you will find the National Capital Commission’s Greenbelt Comprised of 203.5-square-kilometre of  protected area. It includes green space, forests, wetlands, and farms. Kanata is home to a number of parks, including Walter Baker Park and Insmill Park, which are the perfect spots to have a picnic, walk the dog, or let the kids burn off some energy. If you enjoy hiking, then make sure to check out the largest forested area in the Greenbelt—the Stony Swamp Conservation Area. The Stony Swamp sector has over 40 kilometres of trails, and one of the most popular is the Old Quarry Trail.
